Lake Effect
Recently, I was at lake Michigan watching a storm come over the water.  There was a stiff breeze and the wind picked up from the north.  As I was looking up at the sky, an eagle flew across.  It flew over with amazing power, speed and grace.
From my perspective, it looked no less than 40 miles per hour!  I have not witnessed an eagle before  and thought I would never see something like it so close to home.
The event was truly inspiring and made me think of what a beautiful part of the country we live in.
When you talk to someone from other areas of the country and descibe the great lakes, most really don't get it.  They do not understand the size and beauty of the lakes and the area we live in.  Many think, before visiting themselves, that they could just see across or take a leisurely boat ride to the opposite shore.  We know that is not the case.  The lakes truly are fresh water seas, vast in size and beauty.  Being so large, they are also extremely tender and need us to care for them like a mother would protect her offspring.
Many of us Michiganders are by water, whether it is the neighborhood  stream, river, or one of the many inland lakes.  Next time you get a chance to enjoy one of them, I would challenge you to give back.  Picking up a piece of trash, making an environmentally friendly choice at the store or even writing your local, state, or federal politician.  Many of these small steps, done by each of us, can help preserve the beauty for the generations that can enjoy it firsthand and the ones who "don't get it."
Keep your eyes to the sky for the eagles!
